Welcome to the Roman amphitheatre of Amiternum, located in the plain of San Vittorino, just a few kilometres from L’Aquila. Built in the 1st century AD, it could accommodate around 6,000 spectators and features an elliptical cavea with 48 arches arranged over two levels. Amiternum was one of the most important Sabine cities, becoming a Roman municipality in the 1st century BC and known as the birthplace of the historian Sallust. Rich in theatres, baths, and necropolises, the city was a vibrant political and commercial hub along the Via Claudia Nova. The amphitheatre, unearthed in the 19th century and restored starting in 1996, still preserves its monumental Porta Triumphalis and the remains of its perimeter corridors. As you visit, imagine the gladiatorial games and public celebrations that once animated the life of this ancient city, a true witness to Sabine and Roman history in Abruzzo.
