The Church of San Pietro da Coppito is a religious building in L’Aquila, the main church of the San Pietro quarter.
It owes its construction to the lords of Coppito, who thus contributed to the foundation of the city in the 13th century. However, it is considered the oldest of L’Aquila’s intra muros churches, as it was built on the site of a former temple. In the 14th century, it was elevated to the status of capoquarto church, a title it shares with its sister churches Santa Giusta, Santa Maria Paganica, and San Marciano.
The church has a long and complex construction history, which concluded in 1971 with the restoration of its Romanesque-style structure. Damaged by the 2009 earthquake, it reopened on June 29, 2024, after undergoing renovation works.
