Welcome to Piazza Plebiscito, one of the most intimate and evocative squares in Sulmona, a place of passage and gathering since medieval times. Less monumental than other city squares, it preserves a quiet and authentic atmosphere that reflects everyday life through the centuries.
Overlooking the square is the Church of Santa Maria della Tomba, one of the oldest religious buildings in Sulmona, dating back to the 12th century. Its façade is a fine example of Romanesque architecture, with simple lines, a stone portal and a large central rose window, expressing the sober elegance of medieval art in Abruzzo.
The church takes its name from an ancient burial site, or “tomb,” probably of Roman origin, upon which the building was constructed. Over time, Santa Maria della Tomba has remained an important religious and urban landmark, closely connected to the life of the square.
Take a moment to observe the dialogue between sacred and civic space: Piazza Plebiscito and the Church of Santa Maria della Tomba together tell the most authentic story of Sulmona, shaped by faith, community and continuity through time.
