On your right, you can see the old building of L’Aquila’s Former Railway Station.
Imagine going back in time, to when a small railway ran between L’Aquila and Capitignano, winding through the beautiful landscape of the Abruzzo Apennines.
The railway line, inaugurated in 1922, connected L’Aquila with the Aterno Valley, passing through villages, countryside and mountain landscapes. For many local residents, the train was a real novelty: it was not only a means of transport, but also an important connection with the city, facilitating travel, trade and relations between local communities.
The railway followed the valley, taking passengers through curves, bridges and stations, many of which have since disappeared or been transformed. After several decades of service, the railway was gradually abandoned, although traces of its route can still be recognized in the landscape.
Today, walking along some sections of its former route, you can imagine the sound of the train, the whistle of the locomotive and the passengers who, almost a century ago, travelled through this very same valley.
The railway no longer runs, but it continues to tell the story of these places.
