Via Fortebraccio is a street in the historic center of L’Aquila.
Its name is dedicated to one of the city’s greatest enemies, Andrea Fortebraccio da Montone, known as Braccio da Montone, the leader of the siege that surrounded the city between 1423 and 1424 during the War of L’Aquila, in which he lost his life.
Braccio da Montone was a powerful commander serving the Kingdom of Naples, who tried to conquer the city to strengthen his control over Abruzzo.
L’Aquila, however, strongly resisted, supported by the Pope, Milan, and other allies.
After months of siege and devastation in the surrounding areas, the decisive battle took place on June 2, 1424: Braccio’s troops were defeated, and he died from his wounds.
The victory marked an important moment for the city, which managed to defend its autonomy and its loyalty to the Papacy.
